1919年ニューヨーク州ロチェスターで、エイプ&ウィルアム·フェインブルームの2兄弟がニット製品の卸販売を始めた。チャンピオン·ニットウェア·カンパニー。セーターの製造·販売事業をスタートさせ、その高い品質を認められたチャンピオンは、アンダーウェアーとしてスウェットのオーダーを受けるようになる。このスウェットシャツが後に米軍の訓練用ウェアや大学のアスレチックウェアとして注目され、さらにブックストア(大学生協)を通してタウンウェアとして一般の学生へと広がっていった。やがてプロスポーツの世界へも。アメリカンスポーツカジュアルブランド『チャンピオン』の歴史は、このロチェスターか始まった。
