This ring gives camera and lens stability. Its weight causes the center of gravity to be shifted to the lens when the lens is mounted to the tripod. The ring is attached to the tripod and can be shifted to adjust the balance.

By securing the camera around the lens, you can rotate the lens between landscape and portrait modes without removing the camera from the tripod. You can tighten the friction thumb screw to secure your camera to the desired position.
